Chapter Nine

Orion

“I told you, I didn’t find anything,” I shrug, staring down venomous green eyes boring into mine.

If looks could kill, something tells me Isabella Moreno would be the deadliest serial murderer the world has ever known. The glare she’s affixing me with right now is the most vicious I’ve ever seen. “So keep. Looking.” She grinds out.

“I’ve looked over everything, if there is any dirt to dig up on LeBlanc, it’s not digital and I can’t help you,” I tell her with a shrug.

I toss the duffel bag at her feet. “I’ll even refund your deposit, just this once,” I tell her, trying to make the offer sound better than it is.

The truth is, I don’t want her money. I’m disgusted with myself for ever getting involved with this woman in the first place. After Lumi’s abrupt exit, I’d gone back to the house to find that the power had returned, and instead of continuing to dig into Lumi’s life, I’d done a little investigating into Isabella and discovered a vain, vindictive monster.

I should have guessed that from the beginning, and I feel like a fucking idiot. It really takes a special kind of fucked up to try and ruin a family member’s life.

Although from what I’ve seen, “family” is pretty loose. While Lumi’s dad, John LeBlanc, at least appears to be a model husband, it hadn’t taken much work on my part to unearth at least three different affairs Isabella was having. And it seems like her relationship with her stepdaughter is all but nonexistent.

“I don’t want the deposit, I want the results!” Isabella’s snarl is vicious.

“I warned you up front,” I told her again, “I don’t guarantee anything.”

“If you give up now, I am going to make you miserable,” she threatens, “I will blow the whole whistle about your little operation here.”

“Go right ahead,” I challenge, calling her bluff, “If I were afraid, I wouldn’t be here.”

Isabella shakes her head in disbelief. “She got to you. I don’t know how she did it, but the little witch got to you.”

“I don’t-“

“God, I can’t fucking stand it!” she continues, ignoring me completely and continuing to rant, “That brat crooks her little finger and the whole fucking world is ready to drop everything to kiss her ass. She’s so saccharine it makes me sick, and everyone, everyone, just loves her.”

I step back nervously. The woman before me is unhinged, green eyes wild and crazed, and I need to get the fuck out of here.

“You know what?” Isabella says suddenly, then fixes that evil emerald gaze on me, “Fine. Forget it. Get out of here, just get the fuck out of my sight. I’m done wasting my time with useless morons like you, I should have known from the beginning that I can’t trust someone else with this. If I want this done, I’ll have to take this into my own hands.”

“And just what does that mean?” I ask.

She flashes me a nasty smile that sends chills down my spine.
